Located at 21st Street and University Avenue, the South Mall serves as the main quad for the University of Texas at Austin campus. This scenic, grassy area is flanked by six historic, red-roofed buildings collectively known as "The Six Pack." These structures include Batts, Mezes, and Benedict Halls on the east side, and Parlin, Calhoun, and Rainey Halls on the west side. The buildings were constructed between the 1940s and 1970 as part of architect Paul Philippe Cret’s master plan for the campus. Cret’s vision also shaped other iconic campus landmarks, including the famous UT Tower and the Texas Union. The Six Pack buildings were designed to create a harmonious, symmetrical frame for the central lawn. Among these structures, Benedict Hall holds a special place as the very first of the Six Pack buildings to be built. Construction began in 1951 and was completed in 1952. Named after mathematics professor and university president H. Y. Benedict, it originally housed the Department of Mathematics. Other early additions to the group include Mezes Hall, completed in 1952, Batts Hall in 1953, and Calhoun Hall in 1955. Beyond their academic and architectural significance, the South Mall and its surrounding trees—also affectionately referred to as the "six-pack"—become a festive focal point during the holiday season. The university hosts "Longhorn Lights" here, illuminating the trees with vibrant displays every evening. It remains one of the most scenic and relaxing spots on campus to take a rest and appreciate UT's historic architecture.
