The Great Lawn Festival Grounds serve as the sprawling centerpiece of Zilker Metropolitan Park, Austin’s oldest metropolitan park located at 2100 Barton Springs Road. Encircled by Lou Neff Road, this massive field is one of seven distinct zones within the park's 350-plus acres of publicly owned land. Today, it operates as a year-round hub for outdoor activities, featuring popular sand volleyball pits and an iconic rock island situated right in the middle of the lawn. While it is a modern recreational haven, the ground beneath your feet holds immense historical significance. Long before European colonizers arrived, Indigenous people camped, hunted, fished, and quarried rock here for at least 9,000 to 10,000 years. In fact, the Vara Daniels archaeological site, which lies directly beneath the Great Lawn and the adjacent rugby fields, is recognized as one of the largest deeply stratified archaeological sites known in the state of Texas. The park itself traces its modern origins to 1917, when Andrew Jackson Zilker began donating parcels of land to the city of Austin. During the Great Depression, many of the park's most iconic features were developed under various federal public works programs. In recognition of these rich historical, architectural, and archaeological resources, Zilker Metropolitan Park was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The Great Lawn is perhaps most famous globally as the home of Austin's premier cultural gatherings. Throughout the year, it hosts massive public events including the Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL), the ABC Kite Festival (also known as the Zilker Kite Festival), and the summer concert series Blues on the Green. During the winter, the lawn transforms into the Austin Trail of Lights, a beloved outdoor walking trail that illuminates the park with festive holiday displays.

• The park is open daily from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, unless otherwise posted.
• If visiting the Trail of Lights in December, secure a pre-paid parking pass early as close-in parking is limited.
• Consider a ZIP Pass for the Trail of Lights (available December 10-23) to get priority entry at 6:00 pm, an hour before the general public.
