Tucked away just a short walk from the rush of Congress Avenue is a quiet, tree-shaded sanctuary where time seems to have stopped. Welcome to the Bremond Block Historic District, a rare collection of eleven historic homes built between the 1850s and 1910. Framed by massive live oaks and lush plantings, this neighborhood is one of the few remaining upper-class Victorian enclaves in all of Texas.
Six of these homes were built or expanded for the families of Eugene and John Bremond, prominent Austin merchants and bankers. Here, you can admire beautiful Greek Revival and Late Victorian architecture preserved in almost unaltered form. The oldest structures, like the Hale Houston house and the B.
J. Smith house, date back to the 1850s and pre-1860 era, standing on the edge of a scenic bluff. Take a deep breath of the shaded air and enjoy this elegant window into nineteenth-century life.
