How does a house survive over a century and a half of political storms, and even a devastating fire? The Texas Governor's Mansion, designed by master builder Abner Cook and completed in 1856, is the oldest continuously inhabited house in Texas. Cook crafted the home in the grand Greek Revival style, centering it on a block adorned with beautiful trees and gardens.
It became the state's very first historic landmark in 1962. Its endurance was tested on June 8, 2008, when a devastating arson fire tore through the building during a major renovation. Yet, the community refused to let this piece of history slip away.
A meticulous restoration was completed in 2012, returning the mansion to its historic glory. As you walk, consider how this resilient monument still serves as the official home for the state's leaders today.
