Read the story
Every spring, Austin transforms from a laid-back Texas capital into the absolute center of the global creative universe. The epicenter of this massive transformation is the Austin Convention Center. Opened on July 4, 1992, this sprawling facility covers six blocks in the heart of downtown.
Over the decades, it became the legendary primary home base for South by Southwest, the world-famous festival where tech innovators, filmmakers, and musicians gather to share big ideas. Welcoming more than 300,000 visitors annually, the convention center has hosted everything from cutting-edge tech keynotes to the high-energy matches of the Texas Rollergirls. Today, the facility is closed for construction as part of a massive planned expansion and redevelopment, with completion expected in 2028.
It is a testament to how a small, dusty frontier town grew into a global powerhouse of creativity and innovation, all while keeping its welcoming, collaborative spirit alive.
