Imagine a place where the air is filled with the rhythms of salsa music, the bright colors of Latino art, and the hum of a community celebrating its roots. This is the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center on River Street.
The story of this vibrant hub began back in 1973, when a passionate community organizer and cultural leader named Emma Serrato Barrientos initiated efforts to organize what would become a dedicated home for Mexican American and Latino cultural arts. Her dream became a reality when the center opened in 2007. Sadly, Emma passed away, and the center was dedicated in her memory in 2011.
Visitors here can explore two free galleries showing works by Latino artists, or jump into free and low-cost activities like salsa dance classes, traditional craft workshops, and fitness classes taught in Spanish. After undergoing major renovations, the center celebrated its grand reopening on June 6, 2026, with a free family event called "Juntos de Nuevo," meaning "Together Again." It’s a beautifully lively testament to how one woman's vision can unite an entire city through the power of art and movement.
