In nineteen eighty-five, a young, aspiring filmmaker named Richard Linklater decided that Austin needed a dedicated home for true cinema lovers. He founded the Austin Film Society, which eventually grew to operate the AFS Cinema. Today, it stands proud as Austins only nonprofit art house theater.

Rather than just screening the latest Hollywood blockbusters, this cinema curates a vibrant mix of classic, foreign, and independent films, alongside repertory special series that explore film culture and history. Best of all, it keeps its roots planted firmly in Texas soil, frequently featuring the work of local Texas filmmakers on its screens. It is a place built on the belief that movies can bring a community together.
