What if a single evening of poetry and music could spark a decades-long cultural revolution? On May first, nineteen eighty-two, three visionary women—Cynthia Perez, Lidia Perez, and Maria Elena Martinez—organized their very first peña right here in Austin. It was a grassroots celebration of Latino art, poetry, and song.

That magical night laid the groundwork for La Pena Gallery, which officially incorporated in nineteen eighty-three. Located on Congress Avenue, this welcoming space has spent over forty years serving as a vital cornerstone for Latinx and underrepresented artists. It is a cultural hub dedicated to elevating diverse voices and celebrating Latino artistic expression.

As you walk today, think about how those first chords and spoken words in nineteen eighty-two grew into a permanent home for community creativity.
