In the early 1840s, when Austin was a rugged, dusty frontier town, a touch of Parisian diplomacy arrived on a hill in East Austin. Built in 1841, the French Legation is one of the oldest houses in Austin and among the oldest surviving frame structures in the city. It was built to serve as the home and diplomatic outpost for Alphonse Dubois, the French chargé d'affaires to the young Republic of Texas.
Dubois was sent to represent the French government in this brand-new nation. The site tells a vivid story of early Texas settlement and the growth of the surrounding neighborhood. Though the Republic of Texas eventually joined the United States, this elegant outpost remained, opening as a public museum in 1956.
Keep your stride and imagine the French diplomat looking out over the wild Texas landscape, dreaming of a global alliance that was never meant to last.
