Long before Austin had its towering modern courtrooms, the local halls of justice were incredibly humble. Legend has it that Travis County's very first courthouse was nothing more than a simple log cabin. But by 1930, the county was ready for something grander.

They hired the Page Brothers to design a striking PWA Moderne building, completed in 1931 for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars. While the building itself is an architectural marvel, its true legacy is tied to the fight for equality. In 2005, the county renamed the courthouse to honor Heman Marion Sweatt, a key figure in a landmark civil-rights-era lawsuit that challenged segregation in education.

It is a powerful reminder that the buildings we pass aren't just concrete and steel, they are the backdrops of our shared struggle for justice. Let's keep moving.
