The Alley Transformed
Discover how a utilitarian alley behind Rainey Street's iconic bungalows was transformed into an open-air mosaic gallery, featuring works from Mosaic Fest.
Read the story
What once was a utilitarian pass-through is now an evolving corridor of art. Rainey Street was long defined by its charming converted bungalows, bustling food trucks, and creative shipping-container restaurants. But behind those bungalows lay a quiet, back-of-house service alley.
While city planning documents once discussed turning this corridor into a public-facing multi-use space with a community garden and sculpture space, it was Mosaic Fest that truly brought it to life. The festival transformed this ordinary Rainey Street alley into a vibrant, open-air gallery. During Mosaic Fest 2025, the artist Ememem even created striking mosaic installations directly on Rainey Street.
By patching cracked pavement with beautiful tiles, the artist turned overlooked, gritty gaps into unexpected pockets of color. As you walk through this area today, look closely at the ground and walls. What was once a simple service lane is now a place where art meets the street, proving that even a humble alley can become a canvas.
