No matter how blistering the Texas summer gets, there is a place in Austin where the water always stays a bracing sixty-eight to seventy degrees. This is Barton Springs Pool, a three-acre natural oasis nestled right inside Zilker Park. While the air above can feel like a furnace, this massive pool is fed by chilly underground springs connected to the Edwards Aquifer.
The entire system actually consists of four distinct springs, but it is the mighty Main Spring that directly supplies the pool. It is a refreshing sanctuary not just for hot, tired humans, but also for some very special locals. Deep beneath the surface, these clean, constant waters serve as a federally protected habitat for the endangered Barton Springs Salamander, a tiny creature found nowhere else.
So, as you walk today, imagine taking that sudden, icy plunge—a shock to the system that has been Austin's favorite way to beat the heat for generations.
