Tipitina's is one of the best-known clubs in New Orleans, situated at the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street in the Uptown neighborhood. The venue opened its doors on January 14, 1977, founded by local music enthusiasts who sought to honor the R&B pianist Professor Longhair. The club's name is derived from the song "Tipitina" by Professor Longhair, who performed at the venue until his death in 1980. The physical structure at 501 Napoleon Avenue carries a colorful history long before it became a music destination. Constructed in 1912, the building previously functioned as a gymnasium, a gambling house, and a brothel. It also formerly housed the 501 Club before transitioning into the iconic venue known today. Ownership of the club has evolved over the decades. Mary and Ronald von Kurnatowski owned the venue starting in 1997, but in December 2018, it was purchased by members of the New Orleans-based jam band Galactic. Today, the venue is tied to the Tip-It Foundation, which works to support and promote the future of music, culture, and heritage throughout the Gulf South. Visitors to the venue should note that most shows are standing-room-only and generally restricted to guests aged 18 and up. To maintain a clean environment, smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited anywhere inside the facility.
