Long before modern air conditioning, New Orleans architects had to get creative to survive the brutal humidity. Take Madame John's Legacy, built in 1788. It's one of North America's best examples of French colonial architecture, and it's essentially a masterclass in early green design.

To keep the interior cool, the complex features broad, shaded galleries that block the direct sun and rooms designed for maximum ventilation. There's even a cooling cellar tucked away to provide a respite from the heat. It’s a beautiful example of how 18th-century builders used the environment to their advantage, creating a home that breathes with the city.

It's a reminder that the most elegant designs are often the most practical.
