Standing tall in the Central Business District is the Hibernia Bank Building, established in 1921. For decades, it was the tallest building in New Orleans, but its most surprising feature wasn't its height—it was its summit. The building actually featured a navigational light, a lantern that served as a beacon for ships sailing up the Mississippi River.
To support this 23-story limestone giant on the city's soft soil, engineers had to sink over three thousand wooden piles fifty-two feet deep just to reach a stable layer of prehistoric oyster shells. It's a fascinating mix of Renaissance style and heavy-duty engineering, proving that in New Orleans, the most impressive architecture often starts with what's hidden deep underground.
