In the heart of the Central City district, the Ashé Cultural Arts Center stands as a cornerstone of community activism. Founded in December 1998 by Carol Bebelle and Douglas Redd, it was the first institution of its kind in New Orleans founded by and for people of African descent. The goal was bold: to reclaim Central City as a hub for African and African American art and culture.
By using art to foster economic and community development, the co-founders shaped a narrative of empowerment and positivity. From artist support to community partnerships, Ashé proves that culture isn't just something to be viewed in a gallery—it's a tool for building a better future.
