Sometimes a city's greatest legends start in the most unlikely places, like a small tailor shop on South Rampart Street. The Karnofsky Shop and Residence, which began in 1913, became a second home for a young Louis Armstrong. The Karnofsky family took the seven-year-old Armstrong under their wing, hiring him to help with their coal and junk wagons and inviting him to share their meals.

Most importantly, they loaned him the money for his very first cornet, sparking a musical journey that would change the world. Although Hurricane Ida destroyed the building in 2021, the site remains a powerful symbol of the community support and cross-cultural friendships that helped nurture the father of modern jazz.
