Step back into 1799 at the Pitot House. Located on the banks of Bayou St. John, this is the only example of a Creole Colonial-style country home open to the public in New Orleans.
It's a glimpse into an older world, with brick floors and exposed wood beam ceilings on the ground floor, and Caribbean-influenced paint colors upstairs. The house nearly disappeared, but it was moved in 1964 to save it from demolition. That move actually uncovered original decorative elements that helped experts restore it to its former glory.
Now, furnished with period antiques, it stands as a quiet witness to the architecture and rhythms of early Creole life.
