Long before air conditioning, New Orleans architects had to outsmart the brutal Southern heat. Madame John's Legacy, built in 1788, is a masterclass in what we'd now call green design. To keep residents cool, the complex was built with broad shaded galleries, well-ventilated rooms, and even a cooling cellar.
It was a climate-responsive fortress against the humidity. But even the best designs have their limits. The site is currently closed to the public, not because of the heat, but for essential preservation work.
When you're dealing with 18th-century French colonial architecture in a swampy environment, the maintenance never truly ends. It's a constant cycle of restoration to keep the history from crumbling.
