Long before he was a global icon, a young Louis Armstrong found a sanctuary at four-twenty-seven South Rampart Street. The Karnofsky Shop and Residence, which began operating in nineteen-thirteen, became a second home for the future jazz legend. When Armstrong was only seven years old, the Karnofsky family hired him to help with their coal and junk business.

They didn't just give him a job; they gave him a community, sharing their meals and eventually loaning him the money to buy his very first cornet. It was in this blend of a street-level shop and upstairs residence that Armstrong's musical journey truly took root. Though Hurricane Ida tragically destroyed the building in twenty-twenty-one, the legacy of the family that believed in a young boy's talent remains etched into the history of the city.
