Some landmarks exist in brick and mortar, and others exist in the memories of the people they shaped. For years, the Karnofsky Shop on South Rampart Street stood as a physical reminder of a pivotal childhood. This was the second home of a young Louis Armstrong, where the Karnofsky family hired him at age seven and even loaned him money for his very first cornet.
It was a place of mentorship and meals. In 2021, Hurricane Ida leveled the building, leaving nothing but rubble where the shop once stood. But while the structure is gone, the story of the boy who worked on coal wagons and found his voice on a cornet remains.
The building may have fallen, but the influence it had on the world's greatest jazz musician is indestructible.
