Long before air conditioning, New Orleans architects had to outsmart the humid Gulf South climate. Take Madame John's Legacy, built in 1788. It's a masterclass in what we'd now call green design.
To keep residents cool, the house was built with broad, shaded galleries to block the sun, well-ventilated rooms to catch every stray breeze, and even a cooling cellar. This climate-responsive approach is a hallmark of French colonial architecture in the city. It shows that the way the city was built wasn't just about style; it was a survival strategy against the Louisiana heat.
