The gallery's name is a tribute to the history of New York art, specifically referencing Alfred Stieglitz's "Intimate Gallery" artists-collaborative, which was located in Room 303 of the Anderson Galleries building. Throughout its history, the gallery has been a launchpad for influential creators. Early solo exhibitions featured cutting-edge artists like Andreas Gursky and Vito Acconci, while curatorial projects were led by Robert Gober and Christopher Wool during a period when they were relative unknowns. The space evolved further in 2016 when it moved to its current location at 555 West 21 Street. This modern facility was designed by principal architect Norman Foster + Partners. The current gallery is a massive architectural statement, occupying both the first and second floors of its building. Visitors can explore a total of 12,000 square feet of exhibition space, providing a sprawling environment for contemporary works of art.
