Founded in 1994, Apexart is a diverse, not-for-profit art space located at 291 Church Street in Manhattan. It operates as an educational arts institution and an incubator for creatives and curators, having provided professional exposure to more than 1,500 artists throughout its history. The organization maintains a global reach, having presented 269 exhibitions across 39 different countries. The gallery's programming is uniquely democratic. Twice a year, Apexart holds a month-long open call for group exhibitions to determine the upcoming season. This process is managed by an international panel of over 600 volunteer jurors who participate in a crowd-sourced voting system. Proposals are invited from artists, writers, and curators regardless of their background or experience level, with no fees required for submission. Each annual season consists of ten exhibitions, split evenly with five hosted at the New York City gallery and five held in temporary venues worldwide. Beyond these shows, the institution carries out its mission through publications, public programs, and a fellowship program. This fellowship includes both a New York City component and an International Fellowship that sends participants on month-long stays in foreign countries. Situated between White and Walker Streets, the gallery remains open to the public for free. The entrance features two 7-inch steps, though the space provides a portable ramp to ensure accessibility for visitors with limited mobility or those using wheelchairs.
