Castle Clinton National Monument is situated in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan Island. Originally constructed in 1812, the fortification was designed to prevent a British invasion and defend New York Harbor during the War of 1812. In 1817, the site was renamed Castle Clinton to honor DeWitt Clinton, who served as the Mayor and later the Governor of New York. Beyond its military origins, the structure underwent a colorful transformation. It became known as Castle Garden, serving as a multifaceted entertainment venue that housed an aquarium, opera house, theater, and music hall. This era highlights the site's role in reflecting the growth of the city and the nation as it shifted from a place of war to a place of culture. For over 30 years, the site played a critical role in American immigration. Before the opening of Ellis Island in the 1890s, Castle Garden served as the primary entrance and processing station for new arrivals. Specifically, over 8 million immigrants entered the United States through this gateway over a 34-year period, until the facility closed on April 18, 1890. The monument faced the threat of demolition in the mid-20th century but was saved in 1946. At that time, it was restored to its original condition as an early 19th-century fort and officially designated as a National Monument. Today, it continues to greet millions of sightseers visiting the harbor.
