Cheim & Read is a distinguished contemporary art gallery located at 547 West 25th Street in New York City. Founded in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read, the gallery established itself as a mainstay of the New York art scene by presenting museum-quality exhibitions that bridged the gap between recent and historically significant artworks. The gallery first opened its doors in February 1997 in the Chelsea neighborhood on West 23rd Street, debuting with an exhibition featuring the works of Louise Bourgeois and Jenny Holzer. In 2001, the gallery transitioned to its current space on West 25th Street, a facility specifically designed by the architect Richard Gluckman to accommodate high-caliber art. Over its tenure, the gallery hosted diverse programming, including the 2022 portraiture exhibition titled Some People, which featured over thirty artists. It also showcased works by artists such as Sean Scully, Joel Mesler, and Maureen Dougherty. After more than 26 years in business, Cheim & Read concluded its public exhibition programming in 2023. While the gallery planned to close permanently at the end of December 2023, with its final public exhibition being a solo show of Kathe Burkhart paintings, it has remained open by appointment for private offerings through spring 2024.
