What to know

Founded in 2001, the Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) emerged from a coalition of grassroots arts and community nonprofits. These organizers rallied together to resist displacement and save their homes on East 4th Street, ensuring the neighborhood's creative character remained intact. In a landmark event in 2005, the City sold eight properties—consisting of six buildings and two vacant lots—to the block's arts tenants for the symbolic price of $8. This sale came with a strict requirement for perpetual nonprofit cultural use, securing a permanent home for the arts in the Lower East Side. By January 2006, Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially designated the area as a Cultural District, making it one of only two such designations in all of New York City. Today, the district is a powerhouse of productivity, housing 14 arts groups, 10 cultural facilities, and 22 performance and rehearsal venues. It boasts more active cultural space per square foot than any other block in the city. This dense ecosystem serves over 1,500 artists and draws more than 250,000 audience members annually. Beyond property management, FABnyc supports 45 member cultural organizations. They produce public art, organize community festivals, and commission creative projects that tackle critical urban issues like small business survival, resiliency, and cultural equity.
