What to know
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a nonprofit organization located in the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan, serving as a major venue for Nuyorican art, hip-hop, and theater. Founded in 1973 as a living-room salon in the East Village apartment of poet Miguel Algarín, the cafe provided a critical space for playwrights and musicians of color whose work was not accepted by mainstream publishing or entertainment industries. By 1981, the organization expanded from its original East 6th Street space to purchase a former tenement building at 236 East 3rd Street, where it has operated on the first floor since then. For over five decades, it has remained a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, music, and visual arts, celebrating the complex experiences of the Puerto Rican community in the Lower East Side, also known as Loisaida. On October 31, 2023, the cafe celebrated its 50th anniversary and closed its doors to the public for a period of reconstruction known as Nuyoricanstruction. This three-year building renovation is scheduled to continue through 2026, during which time the venue is closed to the public. Despite the physical closure of the 3rd Street building, the cafe's programming—including Open Mics, Poetry Slams, and Grand Slams—continues to take place at various venues around the Lower East Side and New York City, as well as online via the internet.
