What to know

Sheep Meadow is a man-made landscape spanning 15 acres in the southwestern section of Central Park, situated between West 66th and 69th Streets. Originally conceived as a parade ground within the 1858 Greensward Plan, the meadow was designed to evoke an idealized, open country landscape for city dwellers to enjoy. The area derives its name from a flock of sheep that once grazed the grass to keep it manicured. This pastoral era ended in 1934 when Robert Moses ordered the animals moved to Brooklyn, effectively transitioning the meadow into a primary destination for human recreation. Following decades of decline, the Central Park Conservancy undertook a major restoration of the meadow in the 1980s, which was one of their first projects. To maintain the lush greenery, the Conservancy later installed a modern irrigation system in 2001. Today, the meadow serves as a massive urban oasis that can attract as many as 30,000 visitors on a sunny summer day. It is a premier spot for kite flying, sunbathing, and people-watching against the backdrop of the city's architecture.
