Conceived as part of the World Trade Center master plan by Daniel Libeskind and designed by the famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the structure is an oval-shaped, winged steel structure framed with approximately 11,000 tons of structural steel. Its distinctive winged form was intended to mimic a bird in flight, creating a visually striking contrast against the city's skyline. Emerging from the post-9/11 rebuilding and reimagining of the World Trade Center site, construction began in 2004 and the Oculus officially opened to the public on March 3, 2016. It replaced the original PATH station and sits just east of the former Twin Towers site. Today, it serves as the third-largest transportation center in New York City, behind Grand Central and Pennsylvania Stations, serving over a million people every week. Beyond its role as a transit hub, the Oculus houses the World Trade Center PATH station, 12 subway lines, and the Westfield World Trade Center mall.
