At the very tip of Manhattan, overlooking Bowling Green, stands the U.S. Custom House. Built between 1902 and 1907, this seven-story steel-framed building is a masterclass in the Beaux-Arts style.

Architect Cass Gilbert designed it to be imposing and grand, reflecting the power of the federal government. It's a National Historic Landmark that has evolved with the city; today, it houses federal offices and the George Gustav Heye Center museum, which opened in 1994. It's a place where the rigid symmetry of early 20th-century design meets the bustling energy of Lower Manhattan, standing as a stone anchor at the edge of the harbor.
