For nearly five decades, one of Brooklyn's most intimate musical experiences happened on the water. Founded in 1977, Bargemusic began presenting chamber music on a converted coffee barge moored near the Brooklyn Bridge. For years, audiences enjoyed performances on a small stage with a stunning backdrop of the East River and the lower Manhattan skyline.
By 2025, the organization had presented close to 9,000 concerts from its floating venue. While the music has recently moved to the architectural jewel of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse at Pier 5, the spirit of the barge remains. It's a testament to New York's ability to turn an unlikely space—like a coffee barge—into a world-class cultural destination.
