In TriBeCa, there's a green oasis that exists because the neighborhood demanded it. Washington Market Park was a long-standing priority for the surrounding community, who wanted a dedicated space for recreation and nature. In 1978, the Washington Market Community Park corporation was created to make this vision a reality.

It took several years of effort, but the park finally opened in April 1983. Today, it's more than just a patch of grass; it includes sixty community garden plots, tennis courts, and basketball courts. By organizing and advocating for their own green space, the residents of TriBeCa turned a piece of the city into a shared backyard that continues to serve the community today.
