In Harlem, there's a place where art is treated as a nexus for the exchange of ideas about society. Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem was created to be a major institution for Black art, specifically focusing on artists of African descent and work inspired by Black culture. For decades, it has supported emerging artists by providing essential studio space and curating collections that highlight underrepresented voices.
The museum's impact extends far beyond its walls; it's been credited with helping to diversify the entire art world. Now operating in a stunning seven-floor building designed by Adjaye Associates, the museum continues to challenge who gets to be seen and heard in the galleries of New York.
