In the heart of Chinatown stands a forty-four story brown brick tower that represents a major milestone in urban housing. Constructed in 1975, Confucius Plaza was the first large-scale, publicly funded housing project built specifically for the Chinese-American community. It was made possible through the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program, providing affordable homes for neighborhood residents during a time of great need.
Beyond the tower, the area is anchored by the statue of Confucius, sculpted by Liu Shih. Today, the complex is regarded as a significant piece of Chinatown history, standing as a testament to the community's fight for stable, affordable housing in the city.
