Under the massive steel spans of the Manhattan Bridge lies a space that has worn many masks. Construction on the Dumbo Archway began in 1906, and for decades, Water Street flowed right through it, acting as a vital artery between the Gairville warehouses and the Brooklyn waterfront. But by the 1980s, the area had fallen into disuse, seized by the Department of Bridges and used as a gated storage space—a symbolic blockage in the heart of the neighborhood.

It took a complete transformation between 2008 and 2009 to turn those massive gates into a public plaza. Now, with its forty-five-foot cathedral-like ceilings, it's no longer a warehouse for junk, but a civic town center where the community gathers in the shadow of the bridge.
