What to know
Located at 762 Fulton Street, the African American Art & Culture Complex is a cornerstone of the historic Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood. As a community-based 501(c)(3) organization, it serves as a vital space for Black creatives and communities to gather, learn, and present their work, empowering the local area through Afrocentric artistic expression and education. The facility spans over 32,000 square feet and houses several key cultural venues. Visitors can explore the Sargent Johnson and Hall of Culture galleries, which are dedicated to exhibiting artwork from and about the African Diaspora. The complex also features the Buriel Clay Theater, a 206-seat venue used for dance performances, musical concerts, film screenings, and workshops. Beyond its permanent spaces, the complex hosts a rotating array of programming for youth, adults, and families. This includes visual, digital, and performance arts. Current highlights include the 'Emory Douglas: In Our Lifetime' exhibition, which is open across all floors of the building. Throughout the year, the AAACC is a hub for signature community celebrations. The center hosts events such as the Martin Luther King National Day of Service, Juneteenth commemorations, Kwanzaa celebrations, and a dedicated Black History Month program. It also hosts an annual holiday fair for the community.
