What to know

The Beach Chalet is a historic two-story building designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, situated at the far western end of Golden Gate Park. Designed by the renowned architect Willis Polk, the structure opened in 1925 as a city-run restaurant that provided essential changing rooms for beach visitors. Its ground floor originally housed a lounge and bathing facilities for those swimming at the adjacent Ocean Beach. Recognized for its architectural and cultural significance, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in July 1981 and designated as a San Francisco Landmark on February 22, 1985. After a period of closure and extensive restoration that began in 1981, the site was revitalized to preserve its heritage, including the remarkable original murals located in the lobby. Following a renovation completed in 1996, the building reopened with a new purpose. Lara and Greg Truppelli, along with Timon Malloy, established the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant on the second floor. This upper level is celebrated for its sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and its own craft beer production, featuring 6 to 8 brews on tap. Today, the building serves as a multifunctional hub. The ground floor contains the Golden Gate Park visitor center and the Park Chalet restaurant, while the second floor continues to operate as the Beach Chalet restaurant. Visitors can enjoy freshly brewed Chalet Ales and Lagers alongside a menu that includes Sunday brunch and special Ribeye Steaks.
