What to know

Founded in 1871 by a group of writers, artists, and community leaders, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) established itself as one of the most influential fine arts institutions in the United States. It holds the distinction of being the oldest school of fine arts in the Western United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. The institution underwent several identity shifts over the decades. It became known as the California School of Fine Arts in 1916 and eventually adopted the name San Francisco Art Institute in 1961. In 1926, the school moved to its iconic location on the high slope of Chestnut Street, where the building offers views over the steeples of North Beach and toward Alcatraz. For over a century, the institute was central to the cultural development of the Bay Area. Even toward the end of its tenure, it maintained a dedicated student body, with approximately 220 undergraduates and 112 graduate students enrolled in 2021. However, the school's long history came to an end in July 2022, when it permanently closed its doors after 152 years of operation. Following the closure, the Institute filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2023, and the historic building was listed for sale in June 2023.
