Originally constructed in 1855 as an English picturesque strolling park, it was developed by British entrepreneur George Gordon around a new residential community on the south side of Rincon Hill. The park has since evolved through several distinct eras, serving as a residential area for the Gold Rush business class and later as a neighborhood for newcomers from Japan, the Philippines, and the American South. Following the 1906 earthquake and fire, the park took on a critical role as a refugee camp, providing temporary housing for 648 people. Over the following decades, the area transitioned from a post-1906 neighborhood into an industrial and warehousing district, eventually becoming a dot-com and tech hub in the late 1990s. This continuous history makes South Park one of the most historically significant city blocks in the city. In January 2016, the park underwent a $2.8 million renovation to provide comprehensive infrastructural and cosmetic upgrades. This project, funded by park bonds, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, and the South Park Improvement Association, was completed in March 2017. The redesign transformed the space from an English strolling garden into a multi-faceted community space that is now universally accessible. Today, the park spans approximately 34,000 square feet, or 1.2 acres, and features a natural lawn, landscaping, a walkway, and a children's play area. It serves as the heart of the eponymous neighborhood in the South of Market district, encircled by South Park Street and bounded by Second, Third, Bryant, and Brannan streets.
