In the heart of the Civic Center, the Pioneer Monument stands as a complex study in bronze and granite. Dedicated on November 29, 1894, and financed by the estate of James Lick, the monument features an ensemble of figures honoring the miners, sailors, and cowboys who settled California. At the center, a female allegorical figure of California stands tall on a pedestal.

But art often evolves with the values of the people who view it. In 2018, the city removed the 'Early Days' component of the monument due to controversy over its depiction of Native Americans. It serves as a reminder that public art is never static; it's a conversation between the past and the present.
