If you want to find where San Francisco truly began, you have to look to the Presidio. Long before the skyscrapers and cable cars, this land was the traditional territory of the Yelamu, a tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples. In 1776, the Spanish arrived, marking the start of a military history that lasted over two hundred years.
The Presidio served as an outpost for the Spanish Empire, the Mexican Republic, and finally the United States Army. In fact, it's known as the oldest continuously used military post in the nation. It wasn't until 1994 that the land was transferred to the National Park Service, ending centuries of military use.
Today, it's a place of peace and hiking trails, but the echoes of those early forts and guardhouses still linger in the breeze coming off the Golden Gate.
