High atop Telegraph Hill, the view is breathtaking, but the land beneath has a history of volatility. Back in 1870, a great storm tore through the area, destroying the old signal station and leaving four hilltop lots completely vacant. Rather than letting the land sit in ruin, the city turned that disaster into an opportunity.
In 1876, Pioneer Park was established on the site of the former telegraph station to celebrate the United States Centennial. What began as a storm-ravaged summit was recovered and reimagined as a public crown for the hill. Now, it surrounds the iconic Coit Tower, proving that even a devastating storm can clear the way for a landmark that defines a city's skyline.
