Imagine this entire landscape as a vast, shifting sea of sand. Before it was a lush getaway, Golden Gate Park was nothing but desolate dunes. Starting in 1870, a multiyear effort began to transform this wasteland into a green oasis.

It wasn't easy; they actually had to pump water into the sand to make the vegetation take hold. Today, the park covers over one thousand acres and welcomes about twenty-four million visitors every year. From the Conservatory of Flowers to the Japanese Tea Garden, the greenery we see now is a triumph of engineering over geography.

Next time you see a meadow here, remember it was once a desert in the middle of the city.
