There's a place in the Presidio where the city finally gives way to the wild Pacific. The Batteries to Bluffs Trail is a rugged zero-point-seven mile walk that descends from coastal bluffs straight down to the shore. As you walk, you'll pass historic gun batteries, like Battery Chamberlin, which still holds a cannon.

The trail isn't just about military history, though; it's a window into the local geography, featuring coastal plants, seeps, springs, and dramatic views of the Marin Headlands. It's a short stretch of land, but it connects you directly to the raw power of the ocean and the Golden Gate.
