In the eastern end of Golden Gate Park, you'll find a Victorian wood-and-glass masterpiece: the Conservatory of Flowers. Completed in 1879, it is the oldest building in the park and the oldest remaining municipal wooden conservatory in the entire country. Inside this delicate structure, about 1,700 species of aquatic and tropical plants thrive, creating a lush escape from the city streets.
It was one of the first municipal conservatories in the United States and remains one of the city's most beloved landmarks. Walking through its doors is like stepping back into the nineteenth century, where the air is humid and the greenery is overwhelming. It's a testament to Victorian ambition and a living museum of botanical beauty.
