Long before the tourists arrived, the summit of Telegraph Hill served a very practical purpose. In 1850, a semaphore telegraph was installed here to warn residents of arriving ships, giving the hill its name. But the landscape changed in 1870 when a great storm destroyed the signal station, leaving the hilltop lots vacant.

Out of that destruction, Pioneer Park was established in 1876 to celebrate the United States Centennial. Today, the most famous landmark here is Coit Tower, completed in 1933 thanks to a bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the city. From its top, you can see the same bay that the old telegraph operators once watched so closely.
