Long before Golden Gate Park was a lush oasis, it was a vast stretch of sand dunes. To transform the landscape, early 20th-century engineers relied on the wind. Between 1905 and 1907, Samuel G.
Murphy gifted the city the Murphy Windmill. This massive structure—believed to be the largest of its kind in the world—wasn't for grinding grain, but for pumping water to create the park's greenery. Today, you can still see its sails spin on weekends and holidays.
