Harvey Milk Plaza is more than just a transit hub at the intersection of Castro and Market streets; it's a site of profound civic memory. This plaza has hosted everything from candlelight vigils after Harvey Milk's death to the White Night riots. Because of this deep connection to queer history and social justice, the city is currently planning a massive improvement project.
With a budget of 15.8 million dollars, the project aims to create a more memorable public space that honors Milk's mission of inclusivity. Part of this vision includes new public art opportunities designed to celebrate Bay Area activism and Castro community identity. It's a space being reimagined to ensure that the legacy of resilience is woven directly into the pavement and art of the neighborhood.
