It's hard to believe now, but Golden Gate Park was once nothing but a wasteland of shifting sand dunes. Starting in 1870, a multiyear effort began to transform this barren landscape into a lush, green oasis. It took immense persistence to fight the elements and plant the forests and meadows we walk through today.

One of the key tools for this resilience was the Murphy Windmill, built between 1905 and 1907. This massive structure helped pump the water necessary to turn the sand into a sanctuary. Next time you see the greenery, remember it didn't happen by accident; it was engineered through sheer will.
